This how the family put it in the Meyer book. but not accurate according to church documents.

1- He married his first wife 1900. Dorothea Wilhelmina CARSTENSEN. She died feb. 1948 in Greene county Iowa. Her father was Godber Carstensen and her mother was Dorothea JOCHIMS. However, regardless of place of death mentioned in Meyer book, she did live in Minnesota with William.

2- He married his second wife Adele Mathilda GROTE NAEFKE. She was born 5 mar.1887 in Gutting, Germany. Died 17.aug.1955 at Fairmont Minnesota. No marriage date as of yet.

In the photo it is William Meyer with a baby. One of his own grandchildren, or Herman W. Meyer the second.

What you see here is the south side of the new house. The old house burned around 1946. Sylvia and Dwight were married then. They built the House around then, while Herman Sr. stayed at the Henry Mosel farm next door. Dwight and Sylvia lived in a remodeled chicken coop, which remained on the farm for many years long after they moved into the completed house. Sylvia and Dwight raised many little chicks in that chicken coop [hut].

~ For some reason, I haven't found any pictures of
the house being built. Or I could say that if I did find a home in construction, I was not able to identify the house as this one.

~ Little Herman [ Sonny] was born 1947, maybe
during the process of completion of the new house.

~ In May of 1950, little Sissy was born.

~ In 1954 Steven was born.

~ I know this is William Meyer, Herman's
brother. It seems like his wives are
hardly in the pictures. They lived near St. James, Lewisville, and Fairmont. I
am wondering if there are pictures of Herman and family taken in any of those
places of Williams.

Children of William:

Walter -born 1901 greene county Iowa. Md. 1932 and kived in Jefferson Iowa. He md Charlotte SCHNEIDER. Her parents were Henry Schneider and Catherine SPARRENBERGER.

Mabel -born 1903 Greene county Iowa died 1928 Paton [md 1923 to Roscoe Rowe at Paton Iowa. ] after birth of Dorothy born 1928. They only lived in Iowa. Dorothy O. married 1950 in Scottsbluff Nebraska to CUMMINGS She had been adopted by Gertrude Whatcha ma callum.

Ellnora - born 1906 - 2000 in Dewitt, Clinton[md. 1924 in Iowa to Virtus Jacob J . HASS] His parents were Frederick H. Hass and Dorothea H. LAU. They only lived in Iowa.

~ I would like you to notice the slight family
resemblence of Lyle Meyer and his uncle William.

Whatcha ma callum Borchert in Truman was a builder of the home. I have a replica which became a minature Doll house. I was told by Sylvia that it was made by I think Herman Borchert of Truman, Minnesota. I remember visiting the Herman Borchert home, when I was really little. It was my first view of the wilds of Africa on television. The show Whatcha call it?

All in all, my personal view is that this looks like Sonny

Meyer or little Herman. And he was given the nickname

Sonny by those people who worked on the house.

If I come back with More dates, I may be able to pin point the babies age in regards to birth.

Note: About four years ago I still had the certificates of purchase that went into building the new house. Now, somewhere I have one or two. I should find them in a box one of these days.
Note: The Meyer Book information was submitted by family members about their own families. I took my information from there and online genealogy available information.

Other surnames of Interest would be : Jungck, Chance, Hellberg

H A P P Y .. He maybe doesn't know that one reason he is special, is just because he is my child.

He does enjoy t- shirts to express one thing or another. I look at that shirt and remember it all. It makes me grateful that he is still here like normal. Though, the year of his graduation, he did move out. It took me awhile to get used to him being gone. I just miss him being a little boy! I would gladly give up his room, if he wanted to move back. Though, , he can't come back as a little boy. Though it could take me awhile to empty it. I am learning to enjoy his adult stage as well. [ I am trying hard not to be so over protective of him and maybe give him as much space as he needs].

Like others his age he likes bumper stickers as well. I can't think of any at the moment.

~ He's Second born, born on a Sunday/ Monday. Which? Well the day of his birth by Cesarean was my birthday. I tearfully told the doctor that I didn't think it should happen that day, cause my mom had a birth on her birthday and lost him. Even though there was all that blood, which led me to go to the hospital, it was still so foolish of me, to believe in coincidental fate. I thought that if it could happen to her, it could happen to me. Because of the unplanned timing and because of my belief in coincidental fate, the doctor stalled around for what seemed like hours.

As I had time to think and feel the pain [sheepish smile] I was thinking about how I was scared something could be happening to my baby Nicky. [ His name was that as soon as I knew I was pregnant. We called him that in my womb. ] As time went on, I think I was realizing how silly I was being about the coincidental fate issue. So then I said to Dr. Feigle,

"okay doc forget all that, I am ready for this baby"

So, He was born on my birthday. I always claimed he was special because of that too. His name became Nic[k] in any spelling he chooses. But it was no longer Nicky.

~ He was a born good sport, works well with others. Tolerant, Patient, Great sense of humor.

~~~~H A P P Y ....B I R T H D A Y .....to Me too this week~~~~~
~~ I am grateful for having another birthday! I am so very grateful for having the life I have had, the love I have been given and earned and returned. For the responsibilities in life I have again earned, given enjoyed. I was once told, I would maybe be getting Lupins [cause of symptoms I was having]. Fortunately, it hasn't knocked at my door yet, nor has Alzheimer's symptoms, Cancer. For all that I am grateful and thankful for the time given free so far of those symptoms of the dreaded Diseases.
~~ I am thankful for some of my poverty, and I can't tell you why. I am especially thankful for my special children. My family. The life the Lord has given me. Good and bad. Cause it has taught me much more with each hardship. What I endured as a child helped me good and bad raising my own children and has taught me patience and tolerance, and forgiveness for others. And has of course brought God closer to me.
Our stone is Emerald.
Emeralds are special too. It is suggested as an anniversary gift for the 20th and 35th anniversaries and as an alternate stone for the 55th wedding anniversary.
The emerald is both the modern and traditional birthstone for May. It is also listed as a birthstone for the Zodiac signs for Taurus and Cancer, as the Planetary stone for Taurus and the Talismanic stone for Gemini. Emerald and Topaz is listed as in all of the ancient birthstone tables.
I copied this from Laura from Our Scented Cottage
The emerald is also the sacred stone of the goddess Venus. It was thought to
preserve love and has long been the symbol of hope. It's considered by many to
be the stone of prophecy. For some, the emerald acts as a tranquilizer for a
troubled mind and it is said the emerald brings the wearer reason and wisdom.
The strongest time for the powers of the emerald is said to be spring.
In ancient times, emeralds were used as amulets to ward off epilepsy in
children and thought to cure diseases of the eye. Folklore suggests that these
stones will improve memory, intelligence, and enhance clairvoyance thus helping
to predict future events. They are also worn to enhance love and contentment.
Cleopatra prized emeralds above all other gems. Posted by Laura Our Scented Cottage.com/
That seems like the Gem to have, doesn't it.
THUS ends the tribute to Nick for his birthday.
Whatcha ma call um?
A Special guy, my son Nick !
I have just noticed the red nose in most of his special to me pictures... We were still Living in Minnesota at that time  July fourth weekend 1980. The souvenir of this sketch happened to be purchased  on the return trip after the wedding was over.
Sylvia Meyer sister and brother-in- law had taken up the hobby of turning wood [on a woodcutter] in their retirement years. I think it was computerized. She said they had lots of business with it. I thought they were beautyful. The ones in the pictures were for sale. Sorry the picture is not that great.
She said "sure you can have any one of these". I forget how much they were apiece. Naturally, I wanted more than one, so I took a picture of those I wouldn't be bringing home.
I was married barely a year by then. I had so little money to spend, especially since I was expecting a baby soon. We had gone to Flint Michigan for the Wedding of Steve Meyer and Mary Rose of Flint in July 1980 in a borrowed van. I doubt I have much for pictures of the wedding to show at the moment. I wish I did. Bill Peters drove the van most of the time. He and Sylvia had plans on the return trip to stop at their sisters somewhere around Zeeland Michigan.
No one had thought to bring her exact address with them!  It is surprising, that neither of them remembered it as much as they wrote their sister.  Or didn't [ lol]
It was dark when we began hunting for her place. The 'good buddy cb system' helped us locate the place. Rod had always used this while traveling long distances in the van.
What's her name Peters. Wife of Whatch ma call um. Lets see it was by Zeeland Michigan. There is another city near by that I should know because it is the address they used.
I don't know why I have such a difficult time recalling the names and faces of those dear to my mother. But I do.
For the husbands name we have these names to pick from:
a]. Arnie Nelson
b]. Matthias [sounds like Matthews]
c]. Russel South
Her name is
a]. Arneida
b]. Adeline
c]. Wilma
d]. Edith
e]. Thelma
By process of Elimination, I don't think it was Wilma South Or it was. After a little time and investigation, I should be able to tell you. But don't hold your breath while I am gone.
Sylvia Peters got hers free, cause she was her special sister. I picked mine. I really like them. The little stand is great to put by your chair with a cup of coffee and is easily removed to somewhere else. Then you can place flowers or any art object on it.
The smallness of the little piece makes it easy for your grown children to borrow it for their apartments now and then. I don't mind as long as they remember who's it is. And why it means what it does to me.
Frankly, It's Friday --  Bringing Bustles and Bonnets  - The Birth and Death of the Victorian Bustle: an Apologia « Such Eternal Delight
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 208px; height: 282px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Uzs6RQOgEg/SahK3i1654I/AAAAAAAAAMQ/JyBZRM7cP9c/s320/untitled+blog.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307574478962354050" />
Frankly Friday is the day everyone thanks God for his gift of the day. That which, I am always grateful, for it is my day off which comes after four days or seven day stretch. And in rare occasions, fourteen. I usually have a lot of "hustling and bustling" to do on that day. It could be blogging, housework, letter writing, resting, fanciful something or other, you name it.
With that said I am going to move along to the post of the day's subject. I am going to add a blog roll to the side.
I have found so many useful fashion and photography blogs that
deserve a second and third look.
I found them while searching for
certain fashions for
1870- 1872 costumes on trusty Google. I ran into
so many lovely informative
sites, which right away went into
favorites. Occasionally I ran accross
protected sites that would not allow
me to put them into favorites. So, I
wrote them down on a slip
of paper which will be lost and forgotten a day or
two from now.
It's sad, but true. So now,  I figure after I find them I can hop off to my
blogroll, and I can save them  there for later exploration.
I do understand why they do that. They have good intentions for
their protection of their material on the blog, but they hurt themselves. Unless
they are so well known, then it does not matter, right. So in order to be able
to browse the site for all the good reading, I am starting a blogroll or reading
list, which will feature fashion which comes to us in all forms. Photography,
jewelry, dolls, history, etc. As you see below untitled and with the working class.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 247px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8Uzs6RQOgEg/SahJvHfsJ0I/AAAAAAAAAMA/Q337TIVa7TY/s320/untitled+and+working+class.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307573234670774082" />
I think too it will help with my
identification of time periods of the photos I have. See here the woman of the late 1870's, where I have incorrectly colored her costume wrong.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 136px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8Uzs6RQOgEg/SahKpyxArYI/AAAAAAAAAMI/8lI5xYpBuUE/s200/150px-Dress_Late_1870s+lady+180.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307574242718559618" />I don't have bustles on any of my photos. But I do have some bonnets. So I will need to explore those fashions and judge dates according to my photos.
I also have an intention of adding a few
later on military uniform and medals, just because I do have a few people
sporting uniforms and medals.
My first one in the blog roll today is this one which would have been extremely historically useful for me last week.The author comes to us from Rochester, New York.
http://sucheternaldelight.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/the-birth-and-death-of-the-victorian-bustle-an-apologia/
The Birth and Death of the Victorian Bustle: an Apologia « Such Eternal Delight: "1873 Bustle The elliptical hoop evolved into the first bustle period bustle, which was a very narrow hoop skirt with a concentration of hoops in the back and, in most cases, a rigid support arched bone to make the back extend outward from the wearer. The structure was stabilized by a supporting piece of fabric that rested flat falling from the waistband until the knees. They came in many designs, but were hoop-like for the entire first-bustle or “soft” period. First Bustle Period The new shape had an asymmetrical profile, and the gowns that went on top of the bustles embraced this new found release from cross-sectional symmetry. Skirt designs became elaborate to accentuate the form. Decoration became complex and compartmentalized. Perils of the Natural Form from Punch All good things"
I found this site more helpful than the many other ones that I was
looking at. I needed to know the historic detail for the years 1870-1871 as I
need to know the detail of the declining Bustle. You can see here the untitled picture<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 224px; height: 287px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8Uzs6RQOgEg/SahJBuy7CjI/AAAAAAAAAL4/WZOzGBP57Bg/s320/untitled.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307572454946441778" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 179px; height: 209px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8Uzs6RQOgEg/SahHPLqJsiI/AAAAAAAAALw/6sDkDJE27Es/s320/untitled+love+umbrellas.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307570487009325602" />
There is something special about the fashion of a woman with her umbrella, which shaded her from the sun. Her sunshades that are more attractive than modern days girls shades. [tee hee] I am a sucker for fashion pics and just love the umbrellas. I am sure they had a specific name other than umbrellas.
A Bonus for me was that I found her pictures and illustrations so
lovely to view. Just as I always have with my favorite Victorian Magazines.
I have to admit I shall explore this site and others even further to
find more on the American immigrant woman's costume from Hannover Kingdom going
to Nebraska.
I hope your exploration of the site is enjoyable as I thought it might
be. I did say exploration, not exploitation. [smile] I have found some free
fashion girls with the right word through some encyclopedias. They have pictures
with public domain labeling. I am planning to remember that, if I can
come up with the right word to make them magically appear there. [smile
again]
Well Frankly, it's Friday, and I have been dawdling here a bit too long, I really must move on to my job ' whatchama call it ' designated for catch up today. The pictures seem like art.. Not just a photo of whatcha ma call ums, cause I'd pick one of these up in a store anytime and adopt them. The photographs always make me look deeper into them. It's So Victorian. Good for that Schlaphof mother. I love her style throughout her many photographs.
Yes, I know who they are. The little girl is so sweet. The little boy standing is so Victorian. He loves the idea of the courageous leader,  Napoleon, so much he had to imitate him. Or was it that his hand was dirty. Was he scratching? Was it his idea, the parents, or the photographer? Anyway, irregardless of the truth of the pose, I love this picture for the immagination it invites from me. It's in all that little boy suggests with his pose. It's the sweetness of the girl with her basket of flowers. The boy with his book. Where are his glasses! It all suggest personality like a painting or portrait.
The original before my alteration just for this blog.
If your my loyal family members looking at my pictures, you may not know who these children belong to. You will if your in the Luhmann family and have kept in touch with our Luhmann's of Nebraska. You probably know that the Luhmann's spread to Martin county Minnesota as well. They were there through the Theobald family marriage. Many families descending from our Dorothea Lumann Schlaphoff .
According to Ms. Mertens tree this is three generations. Henry William Schlaphoff [ 1850- 1933 ] visiting Murdock. Carl John Henry Schlaphoff [ 1883- 1971 ]. John William Schlaphoff [ 1909- 2004 ]
I included them here, just in case you happen to have this unidentified picture in your attic or photograph book. More than likely they did not stay in touch with Luhman in Lohrville, Farnhamville, and Webster county, Iowa or Ottertail, Minnesota. Ernest Luhmann family from Bleckede immigrated later than the Schlaphoff family. I am not sure how much they would know about the Schlaphoff family who had moved away from Tellmar [ Dorothea from Eichdorf]. Unless there were some shirt tail contact. Which is often the case for news and gossip. Until much later years of course.
Note : Surnames of this family you will find. Schlaphoff, Ruge, Luetchens, Oelerking, Anderson, Hamlow, Theobald. I think it was kept because it was pictures of loved ones. And the family had so few pictures. Many were burned in several fires. So the family appreciated every picture they had.
I have tried to fix the picture. Sometimes distance is better for identification. To me it looks like it was taken the same time another picture I have of a family gathering. And she could be the same girl as above at top of page pointing. Unfortunately, any pictures I have found of her, she is dirty messed up. It is so simple really. The Meyer clan of Herman and William and their sisters and their descendants. Dwight is holding first born little Herman. Who is maybe somewhere between a year and two years.1948 --1949.
At that time the large Meyer family includes family members of those they married past and present. NAHNSENS, STOLLE, CARTER, DEAN, CAINES or GAINES, GOLLWITZER, LAWSON, JAESCHKE, SEIL, WIELAND, MURRY, CARSTENSEN, GROTE, Griffith. And some I can't recall at the moment. I imagine maybe there are alot in the Nahnsen family who did not marry Meyer.  Dwight is second one below. Behind him is his Father, Herman and to the right slightly behind Lyle is Herman's brother William. But I could be wrong. In third row behind the man in the front row is an older man, who strongly resembles the Granpa Willy or Jurgen Hch. Wilhlem Meyer. But I believe William was no longer with them at this time. One of the two ladies to the left of him has the last name Jaeschke. Below the woman peeking between Lyle and the gentleman on the left of him is probably Dwight's wife, Sylvia Meyer.
Do you know who they are?
Who was in a habit of hanging around for the family get togethers?
Winning details :
What do you win? I shall send you a photo copy done the best I can!
Best of luck to you on the superbowl game.
May the best player win.
just me here hopeful for todays winner
Thursday Photo Treats With Some More Whatcha ma callum.
.....The Gustav Jaeschke Family..........
The Jaeschke family. Gustav[e] on left and Elisabeth or Lizzie on the far right.
The oldest boy would have been William, then August, and the Youngest boy would have been Herman Jaeschke. Meyer [father], lower left, and son - Lyle, lower right.
August William Seil eyes are so shaded and sunk, I have never seen one decent picture of him. One can't see his chin for his grizzly beard. Often the beard style one sees in immigrants. His nose and Annies nose are not same exactly. [Maybe, I should put the picture at the side bar. You can't enlarge it, but it will be a handy reference.]
Musings on family physical traits. Family Resemblances.
-Lyle's eyes seem different than Dwights. I wonder who he got them from.
- I think the eyes of Dwight come from the Heins side of the family.
-The forehead may come from the Luhmann side of the Meyer family.-Lyle and Herman's brother William have similar eye shapes.
-Lyle and Dwight ears are the same.
-Sometimes Dwight's eyes seem almost crossed eyed. He never had glasses until old age. [I say this because sometimes people with glasses, who take them off, often appear crossed eyed looking without their glasses] Myself included.
-One relative Lawrence Nahnsen resembles Dwight in looks out of all the relatives.
-One of Dwight's grandchildren from his youngest son resembles Dwight in the eyes and a bit in the chin.
This is Frederick Meyer. If you know exactly who he is a son of let me know..
I think Dwight had eyes like his. Most definately his chin.
-Dwight carries the chin not always seen in all the Meyer children.
- It is obvious in a photograph I have seen of Frederick Meyer.
- Elisabeth Korn had a strong chin as well. No picture here yet of her.
I will try to add that one soon.
It is difficult to judge at all about August William Seil. He has always had all that hair on his chin. Annie carries Korn, Seil genes and an unknown who lived in germany. Korn family and possibly Seil family go back to Hildesheim region of germany.
All I don't know much about August William Seil's traits which would be those from his father Seil and His mother Brookmannn, or Broockman or Brockmann. Somewhere, he had a grandparent with the family name Schmidt. I guess, I haven't tried hard to hurl over that brick wall of the Seil family history from Uelzen and Dahlenburg area of Lueneburg.
Just me here giving my opinion once again.
I AM SEEKING INFORMATION ON THIS MARTIN HOME AND THE WOMAN.
The Martin house. 1920.
Is that child Dwight at a year old. Most often I prefered to stay home and read. But one day I did go with with my mother shopping maybe when I was eleven or thirteen. We ran into someone, who knew my mother. For it being a small town that was not unusual. While they had a little chit chat, the woman informed my mother that I looked like Annies Seil's side of the family. Apparently she was from His [Fathers] side of the family. Understandably, mom wasn't that thrilled that I took after my fathers family rather than her or hers. I had gathered that idea after we had a little discussion about it later after the woman walked away.
Mom wasn't thrilled with that revelation, so I did question her a little about it a bit. At the time I wasn't going to be thrilled to look like my mother. Annies side, I knew nothing about. Nor did I know what they looked like. Also, I gathered from that conversation, that it might not be a good thing to look like someone from His side of the family! [smile]
Now as a mother I understand the feelings. As my children also look like His side of the family. Just once in awhile you want to know they look like you or some family resemblance.
But I wonder, if mom really knew at anytime, how much I do look like her. I also see her in parts of my brothers face. Now in my older years, with my mother gone from this earth, I gladly welcome my mothers eyes that I see, when I look in the mirror. I never saw it or I never wanted to see that much, when we were both younger. I guess, when I was at that age, I did not appreciate her enough. I think I have her chin. That resemblance will be another day.
I have tried to compare myself and the women on my fathers side, but haven't really seen it yet. But then I never saw them as living people. Perhaps it's the forehead, nose or the cheeks. The shape of the face? Mom didn't say what was resembled. Thank goodness it is not the same square chin that His family had [That which Dwight and Frederick had acquired].
Add two pictures at a later time.
just me here saying my thing
Maybe Time Will Tell  Us Tuesday
"Mom, who is that person in this picture? Can you Identify them?
Female on the left is Annie W. (Seil) Meyer.
The gentleman on the Hammock next to her is her husband Herman H. Meyer. I just am not sure about the older man and the young lad on the far right [facing us]. Unless I know who the young lad is, I can't figure out who the young child could be. Girl or boy.? Herman's brother seems short, so I don't think that gentleman is William.
I am thinking that young lad is Dwight and the other child is a visitor. Or the young lad is Lyle and the little one is Dwight. I have thought too of the young Jaeschky children who stayed in the home.
First I will have to establish a time reference and go from there. Maybe I can do that by comparing a few other photos of Annie and Herman with their children.
They could be neighbors visiting. I think if they were visiting a neighbor or relatives the people in the Hammock would be the owners. Or at someones home, the owners are polite enough to let the Meyer family sit on the Hammock for the pictures.
Who are the what'cha ma callums?
Well, maybe time will tell us.
just me here
Abandoned Old Photographs in the Album
"Ohhh, that's whatcha ma callum!"
Every one has abandoned old photographs in their family album without names. Not only without names, they lack description of places. You know they are in there, because the family cared enough about them. Or the loved one was proud of his picture taking skills. But to you with out a name and a description it is meaningless. They often end up in an attic or worse at thrift shops and lost from its family who can identify them.
Often, if the photography is done well, they get snatched up by me. I browse thrift and antique shops for old photos and old bibles, post cards, music sheets and books. [Yeah you might say, I love paper and especially paper with script.] So I have a few photographs laying around for that reason. I adopted them and like others I don't care who they are. [I do wonder from time to time.] And No I am not going to stop buying unknown photographs!
If I don't properly mark them as non family,  my own children will be  wondering which family member they were.  They would be looking at the photo company and wondering why my pictures came from Timbucktwo, Minnesota.
Writing a description on my pictures is not so easy. You remember, the names were taken to the grave by the one who took the pictures. So now I have to search for the names that belong with the picture. That is the purpose of this blog. I hope to post my pictures and hope the relatives find them.
These days I have to remember to document any photo and information given me about each photo. I often think I will remember something. I am so sure of it. But later It escapes me. Years later, if I wait too long, and my alzheimers begins to set in, I might say Ohhh that's Whatcha ma call um ! My children will have no clue.
Who needs frustration with oneself like that!
I know there are many websites with such themes of abandoned photos. This is just me here with just that kind of blog with my families pictures; presented in any way that suits my fancy.
just me
